Star Dice is a Star Trek-themed dice game created specifically for the
Microsoft Surface Table.
My goal was to combine physical dice with the Surface Table's ability to track the positions of objects on the table. I wrote custom software for the table that detects the positions
of the dice and awards points to players for creating "constellations" of dice -- the bigger the formation, the more points awarded.
The design of the game is only somewhat of a success. To a certain extent it is marred by the technical limitations of the Surface Table, which can
track the positions of the dice but cannot recognize the values rolled or their colors. Because of these limitations, the player must keep score
themselves, and the design cannot outlaw constellations between opposing-players' dice.
Star Dice was created for the Game Design class taught by
Jesse Schell at the Entertainment Technology Center.
